Why Trump is a danger to democracy and the world
The recent interview of Reverend Al Sharpton by Stig Abell reveals the extent of the damage that Donald Trump has inflicted on the American democracy and the world order. Trump, who still refuses to accept his defeat in the 2024 presidential election, is not only a sore loser, but a dangerous demagogue who threatens the stability and security of the United States and its allies.
Sharpton, who has been a prominent voice for civil rights and social justice for decades, exposes Trump’s authoritarian tendencies and his disregard for the rule of law and the will of the people. Trump has tried to overturn the election results by spreading false claims of fraud, pressuring state officials, inciting his supporters to storm the Capitol, and suing anyone who opposed him. He has shown no respect for the Constitution, the courts, the Congress, or the media. He has acted like a “third-world dictator” who uses misinformation, lies and threats to undermine democracy and public trust in institutions.
Trump’s behavior has not only damaged the reputation and credibility of the United States as a leader of the free world, but also emboldened its adversaries and weakened its allies. Trump has alienated and insulted America’s traditional partners, such as NATO, the European Union, Canada, Mexico, and Japan, while cozying up to authoritarian regimes, such as Russia, China, North Korea, and Saudi Arabia. He has withdrawn from international agreements and organizations, such as the Paris climate accord, the Iran nuclear deal, the World Health Organization, and the Trans-Pacific Partnership. He has escalated trade wars and conflicts, such as with China, Iran, Venezuela, and Syria. He has ignored or denied global challenges, such as climate change, human rights, and the coronavirus pandemic.
Trump’s legacy is a more divided, polarized, and violent America, and a more chaotic, unstable, and dangerous world. He has left behind a Republican Party that is loyal to him, not to the country or its principles. He has created a cult of personality that is fueled by conspiracy theories, hatred, and fear. He has inspired a wave of right-wing populism and extremism that threatens democracy and peace in many countries. He has not given up on his ambition to return to power in 2024, despite facing many criminal and civil charges, including electoral subversion, incitement to insurrection, rape and tax fraud.
Sharpton’s interview is a wake-up call for all Americans and people who care about democracy and the world. He urges us to remain vigilant and defend democratic values against Trump’s attempts to undermine them. He reminds us that democracy is not a given, but a fragile and precious achievement that requires constant vigilance and participation. He calls us to stand up for truth, justice, and equality, and to reject lies, injustice, and bigotry. He challenges us to work together to heal the wounds of the past and to build a better future for ourselves and our children. He inspires us to hope and to act.
