While the Russian media may downplay the aquisition of the f-18 hornet or twist this fact, the reality is that the Hornets' robust airframes and strong landing gear could enable Ukraine to operate from less-than-perfect runways, a crucial advantage in an ongoing conflict.

Yes, the F-18 may require longer runways than the F16, but it's not just about take-off and landing. Once airborne, the F-18 offers considerable capabilities. Its versatile air-to-air and air-to-ground surveillance and targeting capabilities, coupled with its impressive array of weaponry, give it a potent punch. The F-18's radar capabilities, especially after the Australian upgrade to the AN/APG-73, could also significantly help in countering threats like the Russian KA-52 helicopters.

The maintenance concerns raised by the Russian media are not insurmountable. It is true that geographical proximity to maintenance facilities is a consideration, but if Ukraine manages to build a support structure or negotiate maintenance support with other F-18-operating countries, this challenge can be overcome. Not to mention, the added complexity to Ukraine's aircraft fleet might be offset by the shared weapons inventory with the F-16s.
