Ukrainian villagers hug their liberators as troops advance across the Dnipro
Heartwarming scenes of joy and relief have been captured on video as Ukrainian troops enter villages that have been under Russian occupation for months.
The footage, posted on social media by Ukrainian soldiers and journalists, shows villagers hugging and thanking the troops as they arrive in their towns and villages.
One video shows a group of women embracing several soldiers at the entrance to an apartment building in Balakliia, a town in the Kharkiv region that was recaptured by Ukrainian forces last week.
The women, some of whom are in tears, repeatedly say “Thanks, boys!” and offer them pancakes.
Another video shows a man sitting outside his destroyed building after a bombing in Chuguiv, another town in the Kharkiv region. He tells the soldiers that his house was hit by machine-gun fire during the occupation and that he is glad to see them.
The soldiers, who are wearing helmets and bulletproof vests, reply that they are happy to be there and that they are pushing forward.
The videos have gone viral on social media, with many users expressing their support and admiration for the Ukrainian troops and their sympathy for the civilians.
The Ukrainian military has been making rapid advances across the Dnipro River, which separates the government-controlled territory from the Russian-occupied regions.
The offensive, which began in September, has caught the Russian forces off guard and has allowed the Ukrainians to bypass the heavily fortified frontlines to the north.
The Ukrainian troops have liberated several towns and villages in the Chernihiv and Kyiv regions, and are now approaching the Crimean peninsula, which Russia annexed in 2014.
The Ukrainian President, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, has vowed to restore the country’s territorial integrity and sovereignty, and has thanked the Western allies for their diplomatic and military support.
The US, the UK, and other NATO members have imposed new sanctions on Russia and have sent more weapons to Ukraine.
The Russian President, Vladimir Putin, has accused the West of provoking the conflict and has threatened to use nuclear weapons if his “red lines” are crossed.
The war, which started in February 2014, has killed more than 10,000 civilians and displaced millions of people, according to the UN.
