The conflict between Russia and Ukraine has escalated to a new level of intensity, as both sides employ sophisticated weapons and tactics to gain an advantage. One of the most recent developments is the use of stealth drones by Russia, which are designed to evade detection and strike strategic targets in Ukraine.

However, the Ukrainian forces have not been idle, and have revealed some of the countermeasures they have taken to defend themselves against these aerial threats. In this blog post, we will explore how Ukraine is coping with the Russian stealth drone attacks, and what implications this has for the future of the war.

What are stealth drones and how do they work?

Stealth drones are unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) that have low observable features, such as special coatings, shapes, and exhaust systems, that reduce their radar, infrared, and acoustic signatures. This makes them harder to detect and track by conventional air defense systems, such as radars and anti-aircraft guns.

Stealth drones can be used for various purposes, such as reconnaissance, surveillance, electronic warfare, and strike missions. They can carry different types of payloads, such as cameras, sensors, jamming devices, and bombs. Some of the most advanced stealth drones can also operate autonomously, without human intervention, and communicate with other drones or aircraft in a network.

How did Ukraine respond to the Russian stealth drone attacks?

On November 25, 2023, Ukraine suffered the largest drone attack of the war, when Russia launched 75 stealth drones at Ukrainian positions. The target of the attack was not immediately clear, but Ukraine has warned that Russia will try to destroy its energy system, as it attempted to do last winter.

However, the Ukrainian air defense forces were prepared, and managed to shoot down 74 of the 75 drones, using a combination of radar, anti-aircraft guns, and missiles. The air raid warning lasted for six hours, and the Ukrainian joint forces commander Serhiy Nayev demonstrated a Shahed drone that was captured after the attack.

Nayev said that the drone was painted in black on purpose to make it inconspicuous and mislead air defense forces who use ordinary anti-aircraft guns. But according to soldiers who operated Gepard anti-aircraft guns equipped with radiolocators, a drone’s color and positioning of exhaust does not matter.

Air force chief Mykola Oleschuk said that Ukraine has developed and improved its air defense capabilities over the years, and has learned from the experience of other countries, such as Israel and Turkey, that have faced drone attacks. He also said that Ukraine has received support and assistance from its allies, such as the United States and NATO, in terms of training, equipment, and intelligence.

What are the implications of the stealth drone warfare?

The use of stealth drones by Russia and the countermeasures by Ukraine indicate that the war is entering a new phase, where technology and innovation play a crucial role. Both sides are trying to gain an edge over the other, and to exploit the weaknesses of their adversary.

Stealth drones pose a serious challenge to the conventional air defense systems, as they can evade detection and strike with precision and stealth. They can also operate in coordination with other drones or aircraft, creating a complex and dynamic threat scenario. However, stealth drones are not invincible, and can be countered by advanced radar, anti-aircraft guns, and missiles, as well as by electronic warfare, cyberattacks, and physical sabotage.
