Developed by Lockheed Martin, the Typhon missile system forms part of the U.S. Army’s Mid-Range Capability (MRC) program. Designed to fire both Tomahawk cruise missiles and the Standard Missile-6 (SM-6), the system boasts a range of 500 to 1,800 kilometers. This allows it to target both naval and ground-based threats with precision, positioning the U.S. military to respond rapidly in the event of conflict.

For Salaknib 2024, the Typhon system was transported to Northern Luzon, a critical location in the Philippines that provides the U.S. with strategic access to the South China Sea and even parts of mainland China. The deployment marks the first time this advanced missile system has been stationed outside the U.S., reflecting its importance in the Indo-Pacific theater.

Geopolitical Ramifications

China’s reaction to the deployment has been one of sharp disapproval.
