This article does an excellent job elucidating the harmful effects of ultra-processed foods and it also highlights a key issue that's often overlooked in these discussions: the socio-economic disparity that plays a huge role in our dietary choices. In a perfect world, everyone would have access to and could afford fresh, unprocessed foods. Unfortunately, that's not the case. It's easy to say that ultra-processed foods are harmful and that we should avoid them, but these foods are often cheaper and more accessible, particularly in low-income areas where fresh, healthy foods are scarce or prohibitively expensive. The crux of the problem, therefore, isn't simply about making the right choices—it's about creating a more equitable food system that makes those choices possible for everyone.
