The German compromise on Russian gas
We have heard a lot lately about threats from russia to cut gas supplies to europe. The country most affected by this threat is obviously Germany. Germany relies on coal and gas for domestic energy consumption. This therefore places Germany in the prey of international political ups and downs. However, it is important to remember that the incident that Germany is experiencing is not of a new kind. Already in 2009 Germany had to face a major gas supply crisis from Russia. The cause of this crisis was a disagreement on the level of the price to be paid by Germany to supply itself with Russian gas.
What is the situation today?
Recently we heard tension that there was between the Siemens company because of a part which was in maintenance at Siemens but which has not been put back in place on the Russian pipeline. This piece was blocked in Germany by the German government. Germany has therefore this time decided to exert pressure to influence the negotiations with Russia.
The German population risks paying the consequences
More recently, some members of the German government called on the German population to ration their gas consumption. This denotes a rather extreme situation in Germany.
