The U.S. Navy’s recent unveiling of its vision and requirements for the next-generation destroyer, colloquially referred to as the DDG(X) program, has garnered significant attention from defense analysts and enthusiasts alike. This program aims to replace the aging Ticonderoga cruisers and some Burke destroyers, potentially affecting dozens of hulls. Understanding the DDG(X) Program

The DDG(X) program’s inception can be traced back to June 2021 when the Navy established a dedicated DDG(X) office to oversee the acquisition strategy and ship design. The current timeline projects the first building contract by 2028 and the commissioning of the first ship by 2032. This timeline, however, represents a delay from initial plans, which had targeted 2023 for the contract signing.

The Navy’s previous endeavors into high-tech projects often ended in stagnation. However, the DDG(X) program seems to be on a more promising trajectory. The urgency is palpable. The Ticonderoga cruisers are nearing the end of their operational life, with some expected to retire before 2030. The Burke destroyers will follow suit. The Navy cannot afford further delays, making the DDG(X) program’s success imperative.

Design and Capabilities

While the final design remains fluid, the Navy’s requirements are clear. The ship must have an increased missile capacity compared to the Burke-class destroyers, accommodating larger and longer-range missiles for both anti-ship and ground strike roles. The Navy’s vision for the DDG(X) is not just about immediate capabilities but also about future adaptability. The ship is expected to transition from the current Rolling Airframe Missile systems to laser systems in the 2030s. These lasers, projected to be around 600 kilowatts, will serve as the primary terminal defense mechanism.

Another notable feature is the destroyer payload module, positioned amid ship. This module can house vertical missile launch cells but is designed with flexibility in mind, allowing for other uses as operational needs evolve.

The propulsion system of the DDG(X) will be an integrated power system, drawing lessons from the Zumwalt propulsion and leveraging technology from the upcoming Columbia-class submarines. This electric-based power system is crucial for modern ships, given the high power requirements of contemporary radars and lasers.

Budgeting and Cost Implications

Financial considerations are paramount. The DDG(X) program received a budget of $122 million for this fiscal year. However, the development and construction of the first ship, essentially a prototype, are expected to run into billions. While this figure is substantial, it pales in comparison to the Zumwalt destroyer program, which cost $9.6 billion for research and development alone.

The Navy projects that by the time the 10th DDG(X) is constructed, the cost per ship will fall to no more than $2.5 billion. This cost optimization is crucial for the program’s sustainability and the Navy’s broader budgetary considerations.
