The landscapes of modern battlefields are undergoing a rapid transformation. Gone are the days when ground troops and traditional weaponry dominated the scene. Today, the skies are filled with drones, ranging from sophisticated weaponized UAVs to commercial drones adapted with loitering munitions. These airborne devices have proven their mettle against adversaries who were either caught off guard or lacked the necessary equipment to counter them.

Modern air defense systems, while advanced, come with their own set of challenges. Primarily designed to counter significant aerial threats like helicopters, fixed-wing aircraft, or cruise missiles, these systems often come with a hefty price tag. Moreover, they share a common vulnerability with the drones they aim to counteract: susceptibility to electronic jamming and warfare. In such a complex scenario, the need for a robust, versatile, and cost-effective air defense system is paramount.

Enter the Skynex air defense system.

Skynex is meticulously designed to protect vital assets and infrastructures from a myriad of aerial threats, including drones, helicopters, and traditional aircraft. A standard Skynex setup boasts four Revolver Gun Mark IIIs, an associated CN1 control node, and the X-TAR 3D radar system, specifically designed for target identification and tracking.

The Oerlikon Sky Ranger gun, a 35mm revolving cannon, and its counterpart, the Oerlikon Twin Gun — a dual-barrel remote-operated weapon platform with two 35mm guns — stand as the system’s primary firepower. With a range of up to 2.5 miles, these weapons can target threats soaring up to about 9,842 feet. This impressive range is especially crucial in today’s warfare, where threats can emerge from any direction and altitude.

One of the standout features of the Skynex system is its use of the Advanced Hit Efficiency and Destruction (AHEAD) 35mm programmable rounds. These rounds not only offer a more economical alternative to missile-guided systems but also remain unaffected by electronic disruptions during launch. This resilience to electronic warfare ensures that the system remains operational even in the most challenging conditions.

Central to Skynex’s operations is a command and control unit that seamlessly connects to Sky Master. This unit is backed by the mid-range Oerlikon X-TAR 3D radar, which captures aerial activity in a staggering 31-mile radius. Beyond mere identification, this radar system transmits precise 3D data to the control unit. Automated threat evaluation then processes this data, directing it to the appropriate weapons.

Depending on the mission’s specifics, up to four Revolver Guns Mark III can be operational. These unmanned units are a marvel of modern engineering, combining accuracy with high firepower. They can discharge up to 1,000 rounds every minute. Equipped with their sensors, such as tracking radar and cameras, these units can autonomously engage targets assigned by Sky Master. Their unique 35mm AHEAD ammunition ensures they can neutralize even the smallest of threats.

Skynex’s versatility doesn’t end here. The system can integrate the Oerlikon Twin Gun GDF-009 TREO, surface-to-air missiles, electronic warfare tools, and even future high-energy lasers. This diverse arsenal establishes a comprehensive defense barrier against various aerial threats, ensuring readiness against mass and swarm assaults in future scenarios.

Given its distinctive features, it’s no surprise that Skynex is poised to bolster Ukraine’s aerial defense capabilities. It promises a robust defense against challenges in both short and ultra-short-range airspace. While Rheinmetall has announced that Ukraine will receive two Skynex short and very short-range air defense systems by the end of 2023, there are unofficial whispers suggesting that this system might already be operational within Ukrainian borders.

In conclusion, the Skynex air defense system represents a significant leap in modern warfare technology. It addresses the evolving challenges of today’s battlefields with precision, power, and versatility. As drones and other aerial threats become more prevalent, systems like Skynex will play a pivotal role in ensuring that nations can defend their skies effectively and efficiently.
