Modern warfare involves more than physical skirmishes on the battlefield. The age of information and technology has transformed how wars are fought, with information, or disinformation, serving as powerful ammunition in the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. This article will delve into the subtleties of this ongoing battle based on the Times Radio video titled “Russia launches disinformation operations as Ukraine goes on the attack” featuring Maj. Gen. Tim Cross.

Disinformation and Deception Operations

“Mascarovka,” a term originally used to denote the Russian military doctrine of deception and camouflage, has found a new home in the digital age. Major General Tim Cross refers to this term while discussing the disinformation tactics used by Russia and Ukraine in their ongoing conflict. This practice, according to Cross, is part of a larger psychological and propaganda war where both sides aim to win the media narrative.

While both sides engage in these practices, Russia is particularly adept at carrying out disinformation operations. These operations spread misinformation, causing confusion and uncertainty among the public and even decision-makers. Over the past few weeks, mixed messages from Ukrainian officials have added to this confusion, reflecting the chaotic nature of the conflict and the resulting information warfare.

Understanding Counter-Offensive Operations

Counter-offensive operations in warfare are complex and challenging, requiring extensive resources, well-structured command, and control. Ukraine’s declared readiness for such an operation has been met with skepticism by Maj. Gen. Cross, who doubts their preparedness and capacity for success.

According to him, the recent communications from Ukrainian officials can be viewed as probing attacks, examining Russian defenses, and contemplating where their main offensive lines could be established. However, it’s clear to Cross that these are not yet genuine counter-offensive moves, but potentially the preliminary stages of a more significant offensive.

Distorting Reality: The Disinformation War

A significant issue highlighted by Maj. Gen. Cross is the manipulation of information to distort the perception of reality. Russian media outlets have reportedly been releasing exaggerated figures regarding their military successes, with claims of large numbers of enemy casualties and destroyed equipment. This data must be taken with skepticism due to the ongoing disinformation campaigns.

Unfortunately, it is increasingly difficult to discern the facts in this war-torn landscape, as both sides are engaged in extensive disinformation efforts. Verifying the veracity of these claims and establishing an accurate picture of the situation on the ground is an arduous task. Thus, the importance of critical thinking and source evaluation cannot be overstated in this context.

Training for War: A Key to Success

One of the essential elements in any military conflict is the quality of training received by the troops. In the context of the Russia-Ukraine conflict, Major General Cross specifically mentions the significant role of American and British training.

Both nations have provided specialist and basic training to Ukrainian troops, equipping them with essential military field craft skills. However, the role of the UK and the US extends beyond providing basic training; they have been instrumental in preparing the Ukrainian troops for the front lines.

Nevertheless, the Major General raises a question about the amount of training given to Ukrainian commanders at the brigade and divisional levels. He argues that successful offensive operations require exceptional command and control at the operational level, something that needs rigorous training and experience.

The Shift from Defensive to Offensive

Major General Cross also discusses the significant shift from defensive operations, which Ukraine has been engaged in, to the offensive operations they intend to undertake. The challenges involved in this transition are numerous and complicated.

In defensive warfare, Cross explains that one defender can usually hold against three attackers. However, in offensive operations, the roles are reversed. The attackers must have a significant superiority in terms of numbers and firepower to overcome well-prepared defensive positions.

This reality, according to Cross, should urge the Ukrainian side to wait until they are completely ready and confident in their ability to achieve their objectives before launching any large-scale offensive operation. Otherwise, they risk a failing offensive that could have disastrous consequences.

Conclusion

The conflict between Russia and Ukraine highlights the intricate relationship between physical warfare and information warfare. While soldiers on the front lines engage in fierce battles, another war of narratives, fueled by disinformation and propaganda, is being fought on a digital battlefield.

The challenges facing Ukraine, as highlighted by Major General Cross, are not just about winning the physical war. Equally, they have to navigate the disinformation campaigns and ensure their troops and commanders are adequately trained to shift from defensive to offensive operations.

The disinformation war’s complexity and the battlefield’s realities underscore the importance of critically evaluating the information we receive and understanding the dynamics at play. Only then can we hope to gain a clearer picture of the ongoing conflict and its implications.
