The AMX-10RC tank, a symbol of French military engineering, has seen its fair share of action across the globe. Designed primarily for reconnaissance and fire support, this armored vehicle has recently made headlines with its deployment from the Sahel region of Mali to the conflict zones of Ukraine.

A Brief History

The AMX-10RC was introduced in 1981, developed by GIAT Industries (now Nexter Systems) to replace the aging Panhard EBR armored cars. It was built on a 6x6 chassis and powered by a diesel engine, allowing for a top speed of 90 km/h on roads and a range of around 800 km. Its primary armament is a 105mm rifled gun, effective up to 2,000 meters.

Deployment to Mali

In Mali, the AMX-10RC was part of France’s Operation Serval, aimed at combating Islamist militants in the region. Its mobility and firepower proved crucial in the Sahel’s challenging terrain, where it offered both reconnaissance and fire support.

Transition to Ukraine

In a significant shift, France has agreed to deliver AMX-10RC tanks to Ukraine. This move marks the first time Western-designed tanks have been provided to Ukraine, signaling a substantial escalation in military support in the face of Russian aggression.

Features and Modifications

The AMX-10RC is equipped with a 105mm gun and a 7.62mm machine gun, with some variants featuring additional armor or modifications for desert warfare. The tank’s hydropneumatic suspension allows for adjustable ground clearance, adapting to various terrains, and it’s even amphibious, propelled by water jets.

Operational History

The tank’s operational history is extensive, having served in the Gulf War, the Balkans, Afghanistan, and now Ukraine. Despite plans for retirement, the AMX-10RC remains in service, testament to its enduring capabilities.

The Future

As the AMX-10RC continues to serve on modern battlefields, it’s set to be replaced by the EBRC Jaguar, a new armored vehicle with enhanced protection and firepower. Yet, the legacy of the AMX-10RC as a reliable and versatile military asset is secure, with its recent deployment to Ukraine adding a new chapter to its storied history.
