The Royal Netherlands Navy’s Walrus-class submarines are a potent blend of stealth, technological sophistication, and strategic capability. Designed during the Cold War and operational since the early 1990s, these diesel-electric attack submarines have become invaluable assets within NATO, specializing in intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance, and precision strike operations — all while maintaining an aura of secrecy.

The Walrus-class submarines are renowned for their ability to conduct covert missions independently, without relying on the support of a broader naval task force. This contrasts with larger naval powers, such as the United States or the United Kingdom, which often deploy submarines as part of integrated fleet operations. The Walrus-class submarines are among the most advanced non-nuclear attack submarines in the world. One of their standout features is the X-shaped rudder configuration, which offers exceptional maneuverability — a design used by only a handful of navies. Future Prospects and Challenges

Despite their operational success, the Walrus-class submarines are approaching the end of their service life. The Royal Netherlands Navy has initiated a replacement program, with the new Orka-class submarines expected to enter service by the mid-2030s. These future vessels will build on the strengths of the Walrus-class, incorporating advanced stealth features and enhanced offensive capabilities, including long-range missile systems.

Until the new submarines are ready, the existing Walrus-class fleet will continue to be upgraded. The life extension program will allow the remaining submarines to operate effectively until their replacements arrive. This program includes decommissioning two of the four submarines, with parts being salvaged to maintain the remaining active vessels.
