Before the blackout, demographers used clever tricks to sniff out war losses — tracking missing young men and regional spikes. That window’s slammed shut.
But the math is stubborn:
- 250,000–300,000 soldiers dead since 2022.
- Over 1 million total wartime population losses, including civilians and those who fled.
The Kremlin’s genius solution? Don’t count the coffins. Pretend they’re still out there somewhere… maybe on vacation.

The state’s answer? Mobilize retirees, shame women into having babies, and slap patriotic stickers on the maternity wards that are closing down anyway.
Déjà Vu, But Worse
Yes, the Soviets lied about famines and epidemics. But even they left crumbs for demographers to find. Today’s Russia doesn’t just lie — it wipes the blackboard clean.
It’s not “data suppression.” It’s statistical arson. And the fire’s spreading faster than the Kremlin can censor.
The Punchline: A Funeral They Refuse to Announce
The blackout isn’t bureaucracy — it’s a confession. Russia is shrinking, aging, and bleeding out, and the government’s terrified of letting anyone see the body.
