The recent developments in the Black Sea have garnered significant attention, particularly the actions of Ukraine in the Northwestern region. The retaking of the ‘Boyko Towers’ gas platforms by Ukraine is not just a symbolic victory but has strategic implications that ripple through the geopolitical landscape. Here’s an in-depth look into why these platforms matter, especially from a naval perspective.

The Historical Context

Before diving into the current events, it’s essential to understand the historical context. Prior to the invasion in February 2022, Russia had annexed Crimea in 2014. This annexation gave Russia control over a major naval base and, crucially, the gas platforms in the Northwestern Black Sea. These platforms were not just military assets; they were significant economic entities. They represented a substantial portion of the economic value of both Crimea and Ukraine.

When the war began, Russia swiftly took control of Snake Island, located off Ukraine’s coast near the Romanian border. This, coupled with the land invasion from Crimea into Southern Ukraine, meant that these gas platforms started playing a more militarized role. They became hubs for intelligence gathering, possibly serving as helicopter staging areas and fulfilling other logistical roles for the Russian forces.

The Turning Tide

However, as the war progressed, the tide began to turn. In April, a significant blow was dealt to the Russian naval forces when the flagship of the Black Sea fleet was sunk near the gas platforms by a Ukrainian Neptune missile. This event marked a shift in the naval balance of power in the region.

By May, NATO-supplied Harpoon missiles began posing a threat to Russian warships and the gas platforms. One of these platforms was hit in June and continues to burn. By July, thanks to the combined efforts of the Harpoon, Neptune missiles, artillery, and drones, Snake Island became unsustainable for Russia. They were forced to abandon it, and Ukraine swiftly reclaimed it. However, the gas platforms remained under Russian control.

The Strategic Significance

Fast forward to the present, and Ukraine has now taken control of these platforms. This move is symbolic, representing a morale boost for Ukraine and drawing international attention. Economically, these platforms are invaluable. In any potential negotiations, control over these platforms gives Ukraine a significant advantage.

From a naval perspective, the retaking of these platforms is a game-changer. While it’s unlikely that Ukraine will establish permanent garrisons on these platforms due to their vulnerability, their control denies Russia a crucial vantage point. These platforms can now serve as cover for Ukrainian small boat operations and uncrewed surface vessels (USVs). They can also potentially be used for raids on Crimea, providing strategic depth and flexibility for Ukrainian naval operations.

However, it’s essential to note that Russia still possesses a formidable naval presence in the Black Sea. They have advanced missile systems, like the Onyx, which can easily target these platforms. But the fact remains that the balance of power is shifting. The “front line” in the Black Sea is inching closer to Crimea, making it increasingly challenging for Russia to maintain its dominance.

Conclusion

The retaking of the gas platforms by Ukraine is emblematic of the broader shifts happening in the Black Sea region. While Russia still has a more potent navy, the strategic gains made by Ukraine cannot be understated. The platforms’ retaking represents a significant step forward for Ukraine, both symbolically and strategically.
