The development of ramjet technology for artillery by companies like Nammo, in partnership with Boeing, represents a significant leap in the evolution of battlefield artillery capabilities. The key advantage of ramjet-powered artillery lies in its extended range. Traditional artillery systems, which have seen only marginal improvements in range since World War I, typically have a maximum effective range of about 22 to 23 kilometers. In contrast, Nammo’s ramjet artillery can potentially reach targets up to 150 kilometers away. This extended range is achieved through the integration of a ramjet motor into standard 155mm artillery shells, allowing them to be fired from conventional artillery guns like the L39 and L58 cannons. The ramjet engine ignites after firing, drawing in atmospheric air which, when mixed with the rocket fuel, sustains propulsion over a much longer distance than traditional artillery rounds.

The implications of this technology for military strategy are profound. Artillery units equipped with ramjet rounds can engage targets from much greater distances, reducing the risk of counter-battery fire and expanding the tactical options available to ground forces. This increased range also enables artillery to strike deep into enemy territory, potentially targeting strategic assets and disrupting rear-echelon operations.
