The French-German cultural channel ARTE presents a geopolitical analysis of the relations between Russia and its neighbors, especially those that have been reluctant to accept the influence of Vladimir Putin. The video is part of the series “The underside of the cards” (Le dessous des cartes), which uses maps and graphics to illustrate the complex issues of our world.

The video begins by recalling the historical context of the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, which left Russia in a state of economic and political crisis. Putin, who came to power in 2000, sought to restore Russia’s status as a great power, both internally and externally. He pursued a strategy of “reintegration” of the former Soviet space, using various means such as economic pressure, military intervention, cyberattacks, propaganda, and political interference.

The video then focuses on four countries that have resisted Putin’s ambitions: Georgia, Ukraine, Belarus, and Moldova. These countries have different histories, cultures, and orientations, but they share a common desire to preserve their sovereignty and to develop closer ties with the European Union and NATO. The video shows how Putin has tried to undermine their aspirations, by supporting separatist movements, annexing territories, imposing sanctions, or backing authoritarian leaders.

The video concludes by asking whether Putin’s policy of confrontation is sustainable in the long term, given the economic and social challenges that Russia faces, as well as the growing opposition from the West and some of its neighbors. The video suggests that Putin may have to adapt his approach and seek more dialogue and cooperation, rather than confrontation and isolation.
