NASA also collaborates with other agencies and organizations to monitor the space weather and issue alerts and warnings in case of a severe solar storm.

The probability of a solar storm that could cause an extended internet outage is estimated to be between 1.6% and 12% in the next decade, according to a study by Sangeetha Abdu Jyothi. Such an outage could cost the U.S. economy up to $7 billion per day and affect essential services like food and medicine supply chains. The study also suggests that some regions, such as Asia, are more resilient to solar storms than others, such as North America, due to the different designs and locations of their undersea cables.
