Many rural states are deeply integrated into the existing fossil fuel economy, either as producers or as consumers, and benefit from the jobs, revenues, and subsidies associated with it. The fossil fuel industry also has a strong influence on the Republican Party, which receives most of its campaign donations and lobbying efforts. Therefore, some Republican groups may spread misinformation about renewable energies to defend the status quo and resist the transition to a low-carbon economy.
