How dumb does he think people are? Mika reacts to Tuberville’s ‘abortion after birth’ remark
If you thought that the Republican Party had reached the bottom of the barrel when it comes to spreading lies and misinformation about abortion, think again. Senator Tommy Tuberville, a former football coach from Alabama, has recently made a shocking and absurd claim that Democrats support policies that would allow abortions “after birth”.
Yes, you read that right. Tuberville, who was elected to the Senate in 2020 with the endorsement of former President Donald Trump, has been blocking hundreds of military promotions over a Pentagon policy that reimburses service members for travel expenses related to abortion care. The policy was implemented after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in 2022, leaving millions of women without access to safe and legal abortion in 13 states.
Tuberville’s reason for holding up these promotions, which are crucial for the national security and morale of the armed forces, is that he believes that some of these service members are obtaining abortions “after the baby has been born”. He made this outrageous statement on a talk show hosted by Kimberly Guilfoyle, the girlfriend of Donald Trump Jr.
“The Democrats today believe in abortion at any time, for any reason with no restrictions or regard for human life,” Tuberville said. “I am proud to be pro-life for many reasons, including my faith — another thing that I will not set aside for political correctness. However, even without considering religion, a society that allows abortion up to and past the moment of birth, after the baby has been born, isn’t progressive. It’s barbaric and it’s murder.”
This is not only a blatant lie, but also a gross insult to the intelligence of the American people. There is no such thing as abortion after birth. That would simply be murder, which is illegal in every state and under federal law. No Democrat, or anyone else for that matter, has ever advocated for such a horrific and nonsensical practice. Tuberville is either completely ignorant of basic biology and medical ethics, or he is deliberately spreading misinformation to demonize his political opponents and undermine women’s reproductive rights.
Tuberville’s remarks have sparked outrage and ridicule from many quarters, including his fellow senators, the media, and the public. Senator Tina Smith, a Democrat from Minnesota, called Tuberville’s comments “harmful nonsense” and said that his blocking of military promotions is hurting the military. MSNBC’s Mika Brzezinski, the co-host of Morning Joe, also slammed Tuberville for his ignorance and dishonesty.
“How dumb does he think people are?” Brzezinski asked on her show. “This is a lie. This is a lie that he is telling to the American people. And he is blocking hundreds of military promotions over this lie. This is not only irresponsible, this is dangerous. This is dangerous for our democracy, this is dangerous for our military, and this is dangerous for women’s health.”
Brzezinski also pointed out the hypocrisy of Tuberville, who claims to be pro-life, but has supported Trump’s mishandling of the COVID-19 pandemic, which has killed over 800,000 Americans. She also noted that Tuberville has been silent on the issue of gun violence, which claims the lives of thousands of children every year.
“Where is his concern for life then?” Brzezinski asked. “Where is his concern for the lives of the people who serve this country, who he is supposed to represent? Where is his concern for the lives of the women who need access to safe and legal abortion care, which is their constitutional right?”
Tuberville’s stunt is not only an embarrassment for himself and his party, but also a threat to the integrity and effectiveness of the military. By holding up hundreds of promotions, he is creating a leadership vacuum and a morale crisis in the ranks. He is also setting a dangerous precedent for future senators to use their power to impose their personal views on policy matters, rather than working through the legislative or judicial processes.
Tuberville should stop peddling lies and playing politics with the lives of the service members and the women who need abortion care. He should apologize for his offensive and baseless remarks, and he should lift his hold on the military promotions immediately. He should also educate himself on the facts and the science of abortion, and respect the rights and choices of the people he is supposed to serve.
