Artificial intelligence (AI) is one of the most exciting and transformative fields of technology today. It has the potential to revolutionize various domains such as entertainment, education, health, and transportation. Among the many types of AI, one of the most fascinating and promising is generative AI.

As generative AI becomes more advanced and accessible, it is expected to have a significant impact on the future of technology and society. Therefore, it is important to understand and anticipate the trends and developments in this field, and the role and influence of the key players and stakeholders.

One of the most prominent and influential players in the AI market is Apple, the world’s most valuable company and a leader in consumer electronics and software. Apple is well-known for its products and services, such as the iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, Apple TV, AirPods, iTunes, App Store, iCloud, and Apple Pay. However, what is less known is that Apple is also the leading buyer of AI and machine learning companies since 2016, acquiring 21 startups in this field.

Some of the AI companies that Apple has bought are:

  • Silk Labs, a company that developed a smart home camera that used on-device AI to detect people, pets, and objects, and protect user privacy. This acquisition could help Apple improve its HomeKit platform and compete with Amazon’s Alexa and Google’s Nest.
  • Turi, a company that created a platform for building and deploying machine learning models for various applications such as recommendations, fraud detection, and sentiment analysis. This acquisition could help Apple enhance its developer tools and services, such as Core ML and Create ML.
  • Drive.ai, a company that specialized in self-driving cars and used deep learning to improve perception, navigation, and communication. This acquisition could help Apple advance its secretive and ambitious project to develop an autonomous vehicle, codenamed Project Titan.
  • Voysis, a company that developed a natural language processing system that could understand complex voice queries and provide relevant responses. This acquisition could help Apple boost its voice assistant, Siri, and compete with Amazon’s Alexa and Google’s Assistant.

However, unlike other tech giants such as Google, Facebook, and Microsoft, Apple is very quiet about its AI investments, and rarely discloses or discusses its acquisitions, research, or products in this field. Why is that?
