Far-Right Influence and Smear Campaigns Erode Unity in Pahlavi’s Opposition Movement

Reza Pahlavi, the exiled Iranian crown prince, has emerged as a key figure in the movement seeking to unify the Iranian diaspora against the Islamic Republic. Yet, his efforts have faced significant challenges, not least due to the growing influence of far-right nationalist advisors within his inner circle. These individuals have been accused of launching divisive smear campaigns against other prominent opposition figures, fostering a toxic environment that threatens the movement’s unity.

One of the most controversial figures associated with Pahlavi’s movement is Parviz Sabeti, a former official in SAVAK, the secret police during the reign of Pahlavi’s father, the Shah. Sabeti’s involvement has raised concerns, given his role in the brutal tactics employed by SAVAK. His presence, along with other ultra-nationalist advisors, has reportedly contributed to an exclusionary political strategy that has alienated reformist and left-leaning factions of the Iranian opposition. This shift has fueled accusations that Pahlavi’s movement is veering away from democratic ideals toward a more authoritarian and nationalist agenda.

The smear campaigns orchestrated by Pahlavi’s far-right supporters have targeted prominent figures such as Masih Alinejad and Hamed Esmaeilion, both of whom were once closely aligned with Pahlavi. These campaigns, often conducted on social media, have sought to undermine the credibility of these figures, portraying them as opportunists or suggesting they are working against the broader goals of the opposition. This effort has deepened divisions within the movement, as supporters of Pahlavi increasingly refuse to collaborate with leftist or reformist factions.

The consequences of these internal conflicts have been significant. Pahlavi’s movement, once seen as a potential unifying force against the Islamic Republic, now struggles to present a cohesive front. Many within the Iranian diaspora who supported Pahlavi’s earlier calls for inclusivity are now questioning his ability to maintain control over his advisors and steer the movement in a democratic direction. The ongoing presence of these far-right elements has made it difficult for Pahlavi to build the broad-based coalition necessary to effectively challenge the regime.

As a result, the movement’s ability to serve as a credible alternative to the Islamic Republic has been severely compromised. The internal discord and smear campaigns have not only tarnished Pahlavi’s image but have also weakened the broader opposition, undermining efforts to present a united front capable of leading Iran toward a democratic future.
