In August 2021, during the tense and chaotic days of the Kabul airlift, the Ukrainian Air Force’s 25th Transport Aviation Brigade played a crucial role in the evacuation efforts. This brigade, known for its historic legacy and significant role in airlift operations, executed a series of high-risk flights to evacuate citizens amidst the turmoil in Kabul.

The brigade’s origins trace back to 1941 when it was established as the 709 Night Bomber Aviation Regiment. Over the years, it evolved through various incarnations, including the 25th Guards Night Bomber Aviation Regiment and, later, the 25th Guards Transport Aviation Regiment. By 1992, the regiment had pledged its allegiance to the Ukrainian people, marking a significant shift in its operational focus and national identity. The brigade is based at Melitopol Air Base, underscoring its strategic importance within the Ukrainian Air Force.

On August 18, 2021, the HUR special forces, an integral component of the Ukrainian military intelligence, were deployed on the Il-76MDs aircraft, operated by the 25th Transport Aviation Brigade. Their mission was critical and fraught with danger: to evacuate not only Ukrainian citizens but also foreigners stranded in Kabul. This operation was part of the wider 2021 Kabul airlift, a massive and complex undertaking involving multiple countries and military forces.

The HUR special forces, recognized for their expertise and operational capabilities, carried out this mission with remarkable efficiency. Over the course of the operation, the brigade’s aircraft completed six flights, showcasing the reliability and capability of the Il-76MDs in challenging conditions. Through these flights, they successfully transported over 700 citizens of various nationalities to safety. This was not just a logistical feat but also a humanitarian effort, demonstrating Ukraine’s commitment to international cooperation and aid during times of crisis.

The operation in Kabul was a testament to the bravery and skill of both the pilots and the special forces. Operating in a high-risk environment, they exemplified the dedication and professionalism of the Ukrainian military.
